Fiorentina will be confident of registering their first win of the Champions League group stage campaign since returning to the tournament after a gap of nine years when they welcome Steaua Bucharest on Tuesday. Fiorentina go into their second match after a 2-2 draw against Lyon in their opening match of the group stage. While coach Cesare Prandelli would have been happy with a draw at the kick off, he will be disappointed with his side's inability to hold on to the lead after Lyon scored two goals in the last 17 minutes to stage a late come back from 2-0 down to level the scores.

Alberto Gilardino scored a brace early in the first half to help Fiorentina to a 2-0 lead and looked on course for a comfortable victory but Lyon struck back in the 73rd minute through Piquionne before Karim Benzema equalized for the hosts with four minutes to spare.

 

 

Fiorentina will be looking to maintain their good record against Romanian sides in the competition with the club yet to concede a goal at home in three matches. Steaua Bucharest tasted defeat in their opening match of the group stage when they were beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich at home.

Coach Marius Lacatus will be aware that his side will have to defeat Fiorentina if they are to have any hopes of staying in with a chance of making it to the next round. Steaua have not scored a single goal against Italian opponents in nine matches and have lost four of the five matches that they have played in Italy.

 

 

Steaua have a very poor record in the European competition with the Romanian club managing just four wins in 31 group matches. Steaua finished bottom of their group last season, losing five of their six matches and managing to collect just one point.
