With Germany and Russia both winning seven of the eight games played so far, third place is the best that both Finland and Wales could hope for though Stuart Baxter's side could clinch that spot should they avoid defeat to Wales this weekend. It has been a disappointing campaign for both the sides who have clearly struggled in the group though they were not expected to challenge either Germany or Russia with both the latter teams clear favorites to qualify out of the group.

Finland's crumbling qualification challenge came to an end in their last game as they were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by minnows Liechtenstein. Jari Litmanen looked to have had won Finland the game by breaking the deadlock in the 74th minute but Liechtenstein struck back in the next minute to equalize through Michele Polverino.

Wales on the other hand suffered yet another defeat, this time against Russia with coach John Toshack coming under heavy pressure following loss of form that has seen Wales lose four of their last five qualifying games.

Russia completely dominated the game with Igor Semshov opening the scoring in the first half. Though James Collins equalized for the Welsh nine minutes into the second half, goals from Sergei Ignashevich and Roman Pavlyuchenko ended any slender hopes of a miraculous comeback by Wales.
