Finland are currently placed third in Group Four of the European world cup qualification round with 10 points from 5 games. They are two points behind Russia and could leapfrog the latter into second place should they emerge victorious in this one.

The Finns were spared their blushes over the weekend when they came from behind to beat Liechtenstein by a 2-1 margin. Mario Frick had given Liechtenstein the lead in the 13th minute, but Mikael Forssell pulled things level in the 33rd minute. It took a 71st minute goal from Jonatan Johansson to give Finland all the points on offer and maintain their hopes of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

Coach Stuart Baxter will hope his side have enough ammunition left in them to overcome a strong Russian team and stay in the race to grab one of the eight best runners-up berths on offer in Europe.

Meanwhile Russia will be boosted by the return of boss Guus Hiddink to full-time management of the national team. Hiddink is fresh from a successful spell with Chelsea and hopes his tactics will be spot on in this game.

He has recalled Alexander Kerzhakov to the squad for the first time since Euro 2008. Eugeni Aldonin also finds a place in the team, but Hiddink will be without the injured duo of Dimitri Torbinsky and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. Aleksandr Anyukov is suspended for this game.

Russia are placed second in the group behind Germany with 12 points from five games. The Russian had emerged 3-0 winners when the two sides met in Moscow in October 2008.
