German giants Bayern Munich meet FC Koln in a pre-season friendly this weekend. New Bayern trainer Louis Van Gaal will get another opportunity to get his side into shape ahead of the tough Bundesliga season. Koln finished 12^th in the Bundesliga last season. Trainer Christoph Daum recently left the RheinEnergie Stadium for Turkey. Croatian Zvonimir Valdo has replaced him in the hot seat for the next two seasons. Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier was also approached, but he rejected the offer.

Koln have strengthened their squad with a few quality acquisitions. Striker Lukas Podolski has arrived from Bayern, and Maniche has joined compatriot Petit in midfield. The Billy Goats have a decent looking side, and will be looking for a top ten finish next season.

Everything went horribly wrong for Bayern last season. They were humiliated in the Champions League by Barcelona, lost the Bundesliga to Wolfsburg, and had to sack Jurgen Klinsmann. New coach Louis Van Gaal has begun the rebuilding process, and the Bavarian giants will be keen to get their hands back on the Bundesliga this season.

Bayern spent a club record €30m to acquire Mario Gomez from Stuttgart. Anatoliy Tymoschuk, Danijel Pranjic, Ivica Olic and Alexander Baumjohann are the other notable arrivals at the Allianz Arena. Defender Lucio has left for Inter. Bayern finished third in the T-Home Cup recently. They were beaten 1-0 by HSV, but managed to overcame Schalke 2-1 in the third place playoff. Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes scored an own goal, while Bayern defender Breno scored the other goal.
