The Toffees won three and lost an equal number of their group games to finish second behind Benfica in Group I. They upset Chelsea in their most recent Premier League game. French striker Louis Saha scored a brace to help his side win 2-1 at home.

Sporting Lisbon won their first three games in Group D, drew the next two and lost the final one to finish with 11 points from six games. They ended up as group winners with Hertha Berlin a point behind in second. However the Lions have been disappointing in the Portuguese Liga, where they are currently some twenty odd points off the pace. They were also at the receiving end of 5-2 and 4-1 drubbings from rivals Porto and Benfica recently.

Everton were humbled 5-0 by Benfica in Portugal earlier in the Europa League. But the Toffees are stronger on paper now as a number of key players have returned from injury.
