After being thrashed 5-0 at the Estadio do Luz a fortnight ago in their maiden game against Portuguese opposition, Everton will be looking for revenge when they host Benfica on Thursday in a Group I game. Everton have not won in their last six games, and drew 1-1 with Aston Villa on Saturday in the Premier League. The Toffees took the lead through Russian summer signing Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, who also got sent off later in the game. Villa equalised early in the second half through Norwegian striker John Carew.

The Toffees have struggled with injuries, and the unavailability of several of their first choice players have hit David Moyes’s side quite badly. Captain Phil Neville, defensive stalwart Phil Jagielka, strikers Victor Anichebe and James Vaughan, and midfield playmaker Mikel Arteta have all had to be content with watching their side from the sidelines.

Benfica wrested top spot in Group I away from the Toffees by thrashing them 5-0 on Match Day 3. Former Barcelona forward Javier Saviola netted a brace, while Oscar Cardozo continued his great form with two goals in the second half. Defender and skipper Luisao also scored for the Eagles as they handed Everton their biggest ever defeat in European competition.

Jorge Jesus’ men were beaten 2-0 by Sporting Braga in the Portuguese Liga on Saturday. Benfica were level on points with Braga going into the game, but they are now three points behind Domingos Paciencia’s side.
