The Toffees have had a very bad start to the season, which got worse on Wednesday night when they lost 3-2 to Hull City. Goals from Stephen Hunt, Andy Dawson and Dean Marney gave Hull a 3-0 lead within 30 minutes, but an own goal from Kamil Zayatte and a Louis Saha penalty pulled it back for Everton. However they were unable to find the elusive equalizer and slipped to their sixth loss of the season.
Manager David Moyes is a worried man ahead of this derby and injuries have added to his worries. Everton captain Phil Neville is sidelined for three weeks after undergoing knee surgery, while Steven Pienaar is a doubtful starter with a knee issue as well. However Marouane Fellaini and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov will be back for this game after serving their respective suspensions.
Meanwhile Liverpool need to make a positive statement in this game following their premature exit from the Champions League. The Reds beat Hungarian side Debrecen by a 1-0 margin, but a win for Fiorentina meant they have crashed out of Europe.
Liverpool are a miserable seventh in the league with 20 points from 13 games. Last week they needed to come from behind to hold Manchester City to a 2-2 draw. Martin Skrtel put Liverpool ahead in the 55th minute but quick goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Stephen Ireland put City ahead. Yossi Benayoun equalized in the 77th minute to rescue a point.
Manager Rafa Benitez is under pressure, but has been assured his job is safe for now. The injury list at Liverpool is also a huge one with Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel out for extended periods of time. Dan Agger is fit though and could start this game.
