Espanyol finished 10^th in La Liga last season. They picked up 47 points from 38 games, fifteen behind sixth placed Valencia who took the last European spot. They only scored 46 goals in the league all season, the lowest among the top ten sides.

New manager Mauricio Pochettino has signed rising Israeli star Ben Sahar from Chelsea on a four year contract. Attacking right back Ivan Pillud has joined on a one year loan from Tiro Federal. Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura has also joined on a two year contract from Scottish giants Celtic.

Liverpool finished their pre-season tour of Asia with a resounding 5-0 win over the Singapore national team. It was a much needed victory for Rafa Benitez's side, who had lost one and drawn two of their previous friendlies. Hungarian youngster Krisztián Németh scored a brace for the Reds, with Andriy Voronin, Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt also scoring.

The dust over Xabi Alonso's proposed transfer to Real Madrid has not yet settled. Liverpool have already sold Jack Hobbs, Sebastien Leto, Paul Anderson and Alvaro Arbeloa. Right back Glen Johnson is the only big name arrival at Anfield this summer so far. The Reds have also been linked with Roma's Alberto Aquilani, Wigan's Lee Cattermole and Valencia's David Silva.
