Needing to beat Slovenia in order to progress to the next stage, England struggled to put away the chances that came their way though it was their best performance in the competition so far. Coach Fabio Capello made three changes to the squad with Matthew Upson replacing the suspended Jamie Carragher while Jermain Defoe and James Milner came in place of Emile Heskey and Aaron Lennon.
The changes worked for England who displayed the sort of form that saw them win nine of their ten qualifying games. Defoe justified his selection by putting England in the lead in the 23rd minute while Milner proved to be the key for England with the Aston Villa midfielder creating a number of chances from the right flank. Capello expressed his delight at England qualifying to the next stage but will be aware that tougher tests await if his side are to go far in the tournament.
Germany on the other hand will be confident of securing the required result against England and progress to the quarter finals. The Germans started their World Cup campaign with a thumping victory over Australia but have struggled to replicate the form in their next two games, losing out against Serbia while securing a narrow victory over Ghana.
Coach Joachim Loew will be hopeful that his side can regain their top form as soon as possible with Germany likely to face Argentina in the quarter finals should they progress to the next round. Low could be without Bastian Schweinsteiger who was substituted during the game against Ghana due to a thigh injury while Miroslav Klose is expected to regain his place in the starting lineup after completing his one match ban.
