England will be looking to book their place in the World Cup finals next year by registering an eighth consecutive victory when they take on a depleted Croatian side in their World Cup qualifying campaign on Wednesday. The Three Lions have had a perfect qualifying campaign so far winning all their seven matches, scoring 26 goals and conceding just four in the process. A win against Croatia will put them at least seven points clear at the top of the group regardless of Ukraine's result against Belarus.

England go into the match on the back of a mixed performance in their friendly game against Slovenia on Saturday. Frank Lampard opened the scoring in the 31st minute from the penalty spot before Jermaine Defoe came off the bench to double the lead just past the hour mark. Slovenia reduced the lead five minutes from the final whistle but were unable to secure the equalizer though they managed to make England work hard for their victory.

Defoe's brilliant form for both club and country has increased the competition upfront and while Wayne Rooney's place in the starting lineup is secure, coach Fabio Capello should now decide whether to persist with Emile Heskey upfront of give Defoe a deserved start for his country.

Croatia on the other hand are struggling to hold on to their play-off place with Slaven Bilic's side just three points ahead of Ukraine who also have a game in hand. Croatia secured a narrow 1-0 win over Belarus on Saturday with Ivan Rakitic scoring the game's only goal but Bilic will be aware that his side will have to improve quickly if they are to avoid another thrashing by England.
