The Three lions failed to build on their excellent start against United States after Steven Gerrard had put them ahead as early as in the 4th minute. The Yanks managed to keep the much vaunted attacking line-up at bay before a goalkeeping error from Robert Green allowed them to equalize five minutes from the halftime whistle to claim a vital point from the tie.

Manager Fabio Capello refused to criticize his players but added that they will have to take the chances that come their way if they are to go far in the competition. Emile Heskey had a mixed game for England, setting up Gerrard with a delightful pass but failed to get himself on target after being played clear with just Tim Howard to be beaten. His performance gave further ammunition to his critics, who have said all along that he is not a proper striker. Shaun Wright-Phillips was also the culprit, missing an easy chance as England struggled to put away their chances.

Capello’s side will be going into the match against Algeria with a number of question marks over the starting line-up. Robert Green’s place is in serious doubt after the howler though David James said that the West Ham keeper should be given another chance. Ledley King was replaced at the half time whistle with a groin injury and is a suspect for the whole tournament while James Milner had a very poor game. Garth Barry is expected to regain fitness and should be available for the tie against Algeria. Joe Cole may also get a look in for this game.

Meanwhile Algeria go into the match against England on the back of a poor performance of their own as they failed to put away their chances while an error by Faouzi Chaouchi allowed Slovenia to sneak in a narrow 1-0 victory. Coach Rabah Saadane refused to blame goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi and will be hopeful that his side can put up a better performance against England as they look to upset the odds by qualifying to the next round.
