Three days after playing their first SPL game of the new season, Hearts travel to Croatia to take on Dinamo Zagreb in the first leg of their Europa League playoff tie. Dinamo, last season's Croatian champions, join the Europa League in the playoff stages after being dumped out of the Champions League by Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg. Dinamo drew the first leg 1-1 in Austria, but were defeated 2-1 at home by Salzburg. The Modri had beaten Armenian side Pyunik in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
To add to Dinamo's problems, they will be without key defenders Robert Kovac and Dejan Lovren. Kovac is out with a foot injury, while Lovren is suspended. Dinamo beat Osijek 5-0 in the Croatian league on Sunday. Brazilian midfielder Sammir scored a hat trick, while Mario Mandzukic and Milan Badelj were the other scorers. Hearts lost their SPL opener 2-0 to Dundee United at Tannadice. Striker Danny Cadamarteri scored twice on debut for United as Hearts skipper Michael Stewart was sent off in his first game in charge of the Tynecastle club.
Lithuanian defender Marius Zaliukas will return to his position in central defence for this game, and will also wear the captain's armband in Zagreb. Zaliukas is currently serving a four game league ban, and missed the trip to Tannadice as a result. Young left back Lee Wallace, whose hip injury prevented him from taking the field against Dundee United, is expected to be fit for this vital European clash.
