After beating Sturm Graz in their group opener, Dinamo Bucharest will be hoping for a similar result when they host Greek league leaders Panathinaikos in the Romanian capital on Thursday. Dinamo were clearly the superior side a fortnight ago in Austria. The match ended up 1-0 in favour of Dario Bonetti’s side, but they could have scored more had Sturm Graz keeper Christian Gratzei not been in such outstanding form.

Romanian defender Gabriel Tamas scored the winner on 80 minutes. Substitute Claudiu Niculescu’s corner was headed away by Samir Handovic, but the ball landed at Tamas’ feet. From the edge of the box, he fired an unstoppable shot past Gratzei to put the visitors ahead. Dinamo lost their weekend game to Gaz Metan Medias.

Unlike Dinamo, Panathinaikos lost their group opener. Turkish side Galatasaray beat them 3-1 at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. Milan Baros’ fifth minute cross was intercepted by a Panathinaikos player, but the ball fell to Elano, who slotted in from close range. Baros himself scored the second shortly after the second half began, and Elano added the third ten minutes later.

Dimitrios Salpigidis scored the only goal of the game for Panathinaikos. He fired past Leo Franco on 78 minutes after being supplied with a lofted pass from Giorgios Karagounis. Salpigidis was also on target when Panathianaikos beat AEK in the Athens derby on Sunday night. Henk Ten Cate’s men have won all five of their Greek Super League games so far.
