Reading take on Derby County in one of their most important matches in recent seasons knowing that any result other than a victory will condemn them to the Championship just two years after gaining promotion.

Reading are currently in the relegation zone with 33 points from 37 matches and will have to better the result achieved by Fulham if they are to have any hopes of avoiding the drop. Both the teams are level on points but Fulham have the advantage of a superior goal difference which means that if they beat Portsmouth in the final game of the season, then Reading will be relegated even if they manage to win against Derby.

Manager Steve Coppell has admitted that he made a mistake in not strengthen the squad in last summer and in January transfer window but added that he has been given a green signal to make changes to the squad this summer even if Reading do get relegated to the Championship.

Derby County on the other hand will be hoping that their side will manage to end a miserable season by finally registering their first win under Paul Jewell. The Rams clinched an unwanted record last weekend when a 3-1 loss to Blackburn Rovers meant that Derby will be finishing the season as the worst team ever to have played in the Premiership.

Even if Derby manage to beat Reading this Sunday, they will be finishing on 14 points, one behind the lowest record set by Sunderland two seasons ago. Jewell though will be relieved that the season will be over and will now concentrate on strengthening his squad in the summer as he attempts to bring Derby straight back to the Premiership.
