The Danes booked their spot at next year’s finals on Saturday by beating Scandinavian rivals Sweden 1-0 in Copenhagen. A low, long range strike from Aarhus’ Jakob Poulsen eleven minutes from time proved to be the difference between the two sides.

It was Poulsen’s first ever goal for Denmark, and ensured that the Danes would qualify automatically from Group A leaving Portugal, Hungary and Sweden to fight it out for the playoff spot. It has been a satisfying campaign for Morten Olsen- his charges have won six and drawn three of their nine qualifiers so far.

Hungary were tied on points with Portugal going into their qualifier on Saturday, but the 3-0 loss to Carlos Queiroz’s men has almost certainly ended their chances of qualifying for their first World Cup in nearly two and a half decades.

An error from goalkeeper Gabor Babos gifted Portugal their first goal. Babos failed to collect Cristiano Ronaldo’s cross cleanly, and Simao was on hand to tuck it away. Liedson’s second half header made it 2-0 to Portugal, and minutes later Simao volleyed in the home side’s third to confirm all three points for Portugal.

Erwin Koeman’s Hungary drew 0-0 with Denmark when the two teams met in Budapest in September 2008. Hungary still have a mathematical chance of making it to the finals, but they must beat the Danes by a big margin and hope that Portugal and Sweden falter against Malta and Albania respectively.
