Darlington were given the green signal by the Football League to kick off their League Two campaign as late as a day before the start of the new season. The Quakers were however beaten comprehensively by Aldershot Town in their season opener. Darlington boss Colin Todd handed nine players their debut but he could do little but watch hopelessly from the sidelines as Aldershot raced to a 2-0 lead at half thanks to goals from Marvin Morgan and Andy Sandell.

Winger Louie Soares added a third shortly after half time for the home side. Substitute David Dowson scored a late consolation goal for Darlington, but it wasn't enough to prevent them from slumping to a 3-1 defeat. Darlington reached the second round of the Carling Cup last year, where they were beaten by Watford in extra time.

 

 

Unlike Darlington, Leeds United got off to a winning start as they beat Exeter City 2-1 in their first game of the season. Striker Jermaine Beckford gave them an early lead which was cancelled out by Alex Russell's 73^rd minute strike for Exeter.

However Leeds were not to be denied all three points at Elland Road, and Beckford struck a late winner, created by Robert Snodgrass and Jason Crowe. The Peacocks reached the fourth round of the League Cup last season before losing to eventual semifinalists Derby County.
