They lost their first league game in August to Houston Dynamo, but made up for the loss by beating El Salvadoran side Club Deportivo Luis Angel Firpo in the CONCACAF Champions League. The game was tied 2-2 on aggregate after both the home and away fixtures ended in 1-1 draws. Penalties had to be taken to decide the winner, and DC emerged triumphant in the shootout. Chris Pontius, Danny Szetela, Ben Olsen and Marc Burch scored from the spot as DC ran out 4-2 winners in the shootout and progressed to the group stages of the competition. ![]() This is not the first time Real Madrid are playing DC United. The two sides met at Qwest Field in Real's 2006 American tour. That game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Alecko Eskandarian scoring for DC and Antonio Cassano scoring for Real Madrid. A lot has changed at Real Madrid since then, especially this summer. All of Real's major summer signings are on the flight to North America- Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, and Xabi Alonso. Coach Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping for a good tour of North America after his side failed to impress in the 2009 Peace Cup. Can DC produce a repeat of their 2006 performance, or even better, win against Real Madrid? While Los Merengues are the stronger side on paper, DC are already midway through their league campaign.
