Czech Republic made a winning start to the tournament against co-hosts Switzerland on Saturday narrowly beating them 1-0. The game was evenly balanced with the Swiss even stretching goalkeeper Petr Cech a couple of times in the first half. Tranquillo Barnetta and Frei were in terrific form and the crowd was fully behind the home team.

However the unfortunate injury to Swiss skipper Alexander Frei seemed to turn the tide towards the Czech. Karel Bruckner's side took advantage in the second half. Big Jan Koller made way for Vaclav Sverkos whose penetrating runs deep into the Swiss gave fans cause for concern. Their worry was justified because Sverkos latched onto a header from Grygera to slot the ball home and give his side a winning start.

Portugal buried the ghosts of 2004 when they had lost their opening game. This time Luiz Felipe Scolari's men were tenacious enough to see that their hard work in reaching the finals was not frittered away. Portugal carved out a 2-0 win over Turkey to grab the top spot in Group A.

Goals from Pepe and Raul Meireles gave Portugal a well deserved win against Turkey. Deco was in fine form for the former and he controlled all the plays in the midfield allowing Cristiano Ronaldo a free hand in moving forward with purpose.

A win against Czech Republic can all but guarantee Portugal a place in the next stage.
