Croatia squeaked through to a narrow 1-0 win against co-hosts Austria on Sunday. The latter are still without a win in a major finals since the last 18 years. Although the match petered out to a tame end, it was the classy Luka Modric who had the last laugh slotting home a penalty on 4 minutes.

Rene Aufhauser was the one who brought down Ivan Olic in the box and Modric coolly slotted home the resulting penalty. Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has hailed Modric as world class and in the absence of Brazilian-born Eduardo; Modric may have to shoulder a lot of burden if the Croats are to make any further progress in this tournament.

Germany breezed through their first game against Poland even though experts had predicted that the Poles would give the former a run for their money. Emerging star Lukas Podolski scored a brace that allowed Joachim Low's team to climb to the top of Group B in Euro 2008.

While the Polish forwards did test goalkeeper Jehns Lehmann on a couple of ocassions, the German defense stood tall and did not allow their opponents to get a grip on the game. Germany are favorites to clinch the trophy and if the first game is any indication they do deserve the front runners tag.
