Coventry City welcome Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United to the Ricoh Arena on Tuesday night in a midweek second round Carling Cup fixture. Sign up with the Live Sport Network to get the best action from the 2008/09 Carling Cup as it happens.
Coventry were given an extremely tight fixture list at the beginning of the season, but Chris Coleman’s men have coped well, beating Barnsley and Norwich in the Championship, and Aldershot Town in the first round of the Carling Cup. Robbie Simpson grabbed a brace and Clinton Morrison scored one when the Sky Blues beat Aldershot 3-1. Last year, Coventry produced one of the shocks of the tournament in Round 3, when they stunned Manchester United at Old Trafford, but unfortunately they were unable to repeat their giant killing act against West Ham in the fourth round. Newcastle started their Premiership campaign with a 1-1 draw against champions Manchester United. Apart from the point, the performance of debutants like Gutierrez and Coloccini would have definitely pleased Keegan. Last year Newcastle beat Barnsley 2-0 in the second round, but were eliminated by Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal in the third round. The year before that, they reached the last eight before losing 0-1 to Chelsea. The unpredictable nature of the League Cup makes it a trophy that Newcastle may fancy themselves to win. We could also see Michael Owen start. With Europe and the Premiership out of question, the domestic cups are the only real chance of silverware at Tyneside this season.
Coventry have had an impressive start to their league campaign and have home advantage. Can Chris Coleman prevail over King Kev?
