New Costa Rica coach Rene Simoes will be hoping for a winning start to his reign as La Sele host already eliminated Trinidad & Tobago in a crucial World Cup qualifier in San Jose this weekend. In a position of strength at the end of Round 5, Costa Rica are in serious danger of not qualifying for the World Cup after losses in their last three qualifiers. They lost away at Honduras and El Salvador, and were beaten at home by Mexico. The defeats forced the national soccer federation to fire Rodrigo Kenton and hire Rene Simoes to salvage their campaign.

Midfielder Celson Borges suffered an injury on club duty with Fredrikstad, and will miss both of Costa Rica’s qualifiers in October. Veteran Luis Marin, who captained the country at the 2006 World Cup,  has been recalled to the national team after a gap of three years by Simoes to add solidity to the back four.

Trinidad and Tobago have already been eliminated, and will thus not feature in the World Cup for a second successive time. However Soca Warriors coach Russell Latapy is already planning for the future, and is expected to use these qualifiers to blood several members of his U-20 squad

San Jose Earthquakes striker Cornell Glen is out with a cruciate ligament injury, but Latapy can call upon Kenwyne Jones and Jason Scotland, both of whom ply their trade in the English Premier League. Also in the squad are Bolton defender Jlloyd Samuel and Ipswich winger Carlos Edwards.
