Copenhagen advanced to the group stage by beating Cliftonville, Lillestrom and FC Moscow. They finished third in Group G behind St.Etienne and Valencia, edging Club Brugge out for the last qualifying spot. The Danes scored four goals in their group campaign, with three of them coming from Brazilian striker Cesar Santin. Former Chelsea winger Jesper Gronkjaer could make a brief appearance in this game should he recover from his knee injury.

Manchester City have been very inconsistent, and slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of managerless Portsmouth last week. Manager Mark Hughes was disgusted at the spineless performance of his side, and City will have to perform better if they are to beat Copenhagen.

 

 

City topped Group A with seven points from four games, losing their last group game to Racing Santander. Three of City’s winter signings- Craig Bellamy, Shay Given and Wayne Bridge have been added to City’s UEFA Cup squad. Midfielder Nigel de Jong misses out though, with Hughes having to choose between him and Bridge.

Copenhagen will take some inspiration from fellow Danish club Midtjylland, who beat City 1-0 at Eastlands before losing the away leg on penalties. Midtjylland were just minutes away from dumping City out of the competition, but Danny Califf’s own goal threw City a lifeline, and they clung to it.
