Colombia's hops of making it to the World Cup 2010 are admittedly slim, but in a volatile South American landscape, anything is possible. However Colombia's hopes were badly dented when they lost 1-0 to Argentina over the weekend.

Daniel Alberto Diaz was the lone goal scorer of the game. The win helped Argentina stay in the top four, while it condemned Colombia to the eighth spot in the group with 14 points from 13 games. Los Cafeteros will need to win against Peru in Medellin at all costs as the race for the play-off place gets hotter.

Colombia coach Eduardo Lara is hopeful his side can win against the rock-bottom Peru. He has called up Inter Milan defender Ivan Cordoba for the first time in two years. Juan Guillermo Cuadrado and Teofilo Gutierrez also make it to the squad for the first time in their careers.

Meanwhile Peru's campaign is seemingly over as they are placed at the bottom of the group with just 7 points from 13 games played so far.

In their last game Peru were unlucky to lose 1-2 to Ecuador despite putting on a good show. Goals from Jefferson Montero and Carlos Tenorio nullified Juan Vargas' 51st minute equalizer to give Ecuador all three points on offer.

Peru coach Jose del Solar will hope his players are up to the challenge on Wednesday as they seek to get off the bottom with a much-needed win.
