Victory will give them a direct ticket to South Africa, while a draw will assure them of a spot in the playoff round, regardless of the result of their final game against Ecuador. Chile were beaten 4-2 by Brazil in Round 16. Humberto Suazo’s second half brace put Chile back on level terms after Nilmar and Julio Baptista had given Brazil a 2-0 lead going into the interval. However Nilmar again struck twice to complete his hat trick and give Brazil their ninth win in qualifying.
