The Blues handed Tottenham Hotspur their second defeat of the season as they produced another efficient display to beat the Lilywhites 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening. Defender Ashley Cole took Vedran Corluka by surprise and headed in Chelsea’s first, and second half strikes from Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba allowed Carlo Ancelotti’s side to cruise to a 3-0 win.

Last season, Chelsea crushed Portsmouth 4-0 in the third round, but were upset by Owen Coyle’s Burnley on penalties in the next round. Didier Drogba put Chelsea ahead at the Bridge, but the Clarets kept fighting and were rewarded when they emerged 5-4 winners in the shoot out.

QPR extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to five games when they beat Cardiff City 2-0 on Saturday. On-loan striker Jay Simpson scored twice for the Hoops as they picked up their second away win of the season against the Bluebirds.

QPR hammered Exeter City 5-0 in the first round, and then beat Accrington Stanley 2-1 in the second round. Wayne Routledge, who scored a second half hat trick against Exeter, also found the back of the net against Accrington. Last season QPR reached the fourth round of the competition before losing to Man United at Old Trafford.
