Champions League Final 2007Final - 23 May 2007
When Liverpool FC and AC Milan meet in the UEFA Champions League final on the 23rd of May they will both have the chance to enter the record books both for their countries and clubs. On a national level the UEFA Champions League has been won by a Spanish team on 11 occasions. However, English and Italian teams sit one victory behind meaning that one of the finalists will help their country join Spain as the most successful nation in the history of the tournament. Not only are there records to be made on a national level but also on a club level. This is the second time both teams have met in the UEFA Champions League Final in the last 3 seasons. AC Milan’s appearance in the final is a whopping 25th for an Italian team. However, out of 25 appearances only 10 have been successful for Serie A teams a disappointing tally for a nation that currently holds the FIFA World Cup. England fall slightly short of other nations appearing in only 13 finals. However, when they do reach the final they have a much higher success rate than other nations. 10 wins in 13 finals is a very impressive statistic. There is no better example of this at a club level than Liverpool themselves who have lifted the Champions League trophy five out of six times. In comparison Real Madrid have succeeded 9 out of 12 and AC Milan only 6 out of 10. Rafa Benitez and Carlo Ancelotti also already have UEFA Champions League final experience. Ancelotti led Milan to beat Juventus on penalties back in 2003. Benitez led Liverpool to come from 3 goals down to beat AC Milan on penalty kicks 2 seasons ago. Records are there to be made for both clubs, both countries and both managers so it promises to be a spectacle with the very best football in Europe.
