Celtic will be hoping to bow out of their European campaign in a positive fashion when they welcome Villarreal in their final Champions League group match on Wednesday. The Scottish champions will be disappointed with their performance in the Champions League after managing to collect just two points from their five matches so far. Celtic were held to a 0-0 draw at home by AaB Aalborg BK, a side that they were expected to beat comfortably, and followed it up with defeats against Villarreal and Manchester United before holding the defending champions to a draw at home.
With dreams of qualifying to the knockout round all but over, Celtic needed to beat Aalborg in their last match to book their place in the UEFA Cup but suffered a 2-1 defeat in Denmark after being ahead in the match midway through the second half. With his side destined to finish at the bottom of the group table, Celtic manager Gordon Strachan will be hoping that his side will be able to end the campaign on a high with a victory over Villarreal and avoid registering their worst ever performance in the group stage.
Villarreal on the other hand will be hoping to take advantage of any slip ups by Manchester United against Aalborg and finish at the top of the group table with a convining victory over Celtic. Both United and Villarreal are level on nine points but the English champions have a better goal difference compared to their Spanish counterparts and are favorites to finish at the top. Villarreal have already beaten Celtic earlier this season, securing a narrow 1-0 win thanks to a Marcos Senna free kick.
