It took Tony Mowbray's men half an hour to get started, but once they did, there was no looking back. Italian midfielder Massimo Donati continued to progress under Mowbray as he grabbed the opener, and Australian striker Scott McDonald made it 2-0 from the spot eight minutes later.
Any chance of an Al Ahly comeback was quashed early in the second half as Shaun Maloney got into the act and McDonald grabbed his second. Substitute Chris Killen added a fifth in the ending minutes of the game, diverting a Koki Mizuno effort past Ahly keeper Hameed. Injury ravaged Tottenham Hotspur needed a late goal from youngster Jake Livermore to draw 1-1 with Barcelona's reserves. New signing Kyle Naughton made his official debut for Spurs, but there were few positives that Harry Redknapp could take from the game. Barca were the better side, and probably deserved to win the game through Bojan's first half strike, created by midfielder Yaya Toure.
With Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate missing through injury, Redknapp had to cobble together a makeshift pairing in the centre of defence. Tom Huddlestone and Pascal Chimbonda both partnered Vedran Corluka. Jermain Defoe was on his own upfront for the first half. It was ultimately left to Livermore, who came on for Palacios, to save the day for the Lilywhites.
