The Gers have created a seven-point gap at the top of the table after beating Dundee United by a 7-1 margin. Star striker Kris Boyd scored five of the goals, while Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra scored the others. Damien Casalinuovo pulled one back for United.

In the process of scoring five goals Boyd also overtook Henrik Larsson as the top scorer in Clydesdale Bank Premier League. Larsson had 158 goals in the SPL in his time at Celtic. Boyd overtook him and now has 160 goals to his name.

Rangers boss Walter Smith will be delighted with his side's commanding performance of late. The form that Boyd is in has seen Rangers race to 43 points from 18 games played so far. Kenny Miller's straight red card in the Dundee United game means he misses out on the Old Firm clash, but the club is planning to appeal his dismissal.

Meanwhile Celtic face the risk of losing pace in the race to win the SPL. The Hoops' game against Kilmarnock was called off owing to bad weather, which means they do have a game in hand, but face the risk of falling 10 points behind Rangers.

Manager Tony Mowbray is already under pressure and a loss to the old rivals could put his job in jeopardy.
