This coming weekend, the cup offers a welcome respite to Celtic after the somewhat erratic performances of the last couple of months – performances that have allowed Rangers to get right back into the title race. Last weekend, Celtic travelled to bottom placed Inverness in the snowy Highlands and could only come away with a tame 0-0 draw. Inverness were probably buoyed by the fact that it was new manager Terry Butcher’s first game in charge, and they put in a performance to make him proud.
For the most part, the game was a rather tetchy affair with no team seemingly capable of stamping their authority on proceedings. They both squandered chances and both had efforts saved by the respective keepers. In the end, a draw was the fair result but it is a result that will worry Celtic as much as it heartened Inverness. Gordon Strachan will be a concerned man right now as his team seem powerless to step up their performances of late. They have let a comfortable seven point lead over Rangers at the top of the table whittle down to just two and we have mentioned the fact that Celtic have been disappointing of late many times in this column over the last few weeks.

It will be interesting to see what sort of team Strachan puts out for the cup game against Queens Park on Saturday but one thing is for sure – anything less than a convincing win against the second division side will be seen as an unmitigated disaster.
Queens Park comes into this difficult game on the back of a 1-1 home draw against Stranraer in their last second division league encounter and they needed a last minute equaliser to salvage the points. They sit seventh (out of ten) in their division with 23 points and haven’t won in the league since the 20th December (although they have had a few games postponed in that time).
