Celtic have almost lost the SPL trophy after Rangers beat them 1-0 in their last game. With just a handful of fixtures left and a six-point gap at the top, manager Gordon Strachan knows there is no way back for the Bhoys. ![]() The reigning Scottish champions had a bad week in the UEFA Champions League losing 1-0 to Benfica so they will be eager to reinforce their Premier League supremacy with a win over Motherwell this weekend.
Manager Gordon Strachan will also hope to put away memories of their 3-0 loss to Rangers in the derby game in SPL last weekend. Scott McDonald and Japanese international player Shunsuke Nakamura did not feature in the Champions League defeat, but will hope to return against Motherwell.
Captain Stephen McManus who was injured in the Rangers clash did feature in the Benfica match mid-week and he must be fit to take his place against Motherwell. Hartley is the only injury concern for Celtic having strained his hamstring.
McDonald and Vennegoor of Hesselink are top scorers for Celtic with five goals each this season. Celtic sit on top of the SPL table with 22 points from 10 games, but are tyop only because of goal difference as Rangers have the same number of points from 10 games as well.
Motherwell on the other hand had a great game last weekend as they ousted Hibernian 2-1. A brace by Ross McCormack was enough to seal the win for Motherwell and help them bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Dundee United.
The Scottish Premier League club though has had some setbacks in the personnel department as Irish forward Trevor Molloy has left Fir Park. Motherwell defender David Nixon has also signed a loan deal with Queen of the South. Additionally defender Martyn Corrigan has moved to Dundee United on a loan deal as well.
Porter and McCormack with 3 goals each have top scored for Motherwell this season thus far. The team is fifth in the SPL table with 16 points from 10 games.
Last season Celtic clinched this fixture 1-0 and will want to extend their dominance this time as well.
