Celtic will need to pull up their socks and start getting the requisite points starting from their weekend game against Falkirk if they are to pose a realistic challenge to wrest the SPL title from Rangers. The Hoops have not featured in a competitive game since the Old Firm derby a fortnight ago when they held Rangers to a 1-1 draw. Scott McDonald's 79th minute strike had given Celtic the lead, but Lee McCulloch pulled it back within 2 minutes for Gers. The draw meant Celtic continue to lag behind Rangers by 7 points even though they have a game in hand.

Manager Tony Mowbray is under pressure at Parkhead and although experts say he needs time to settle in, the board may not be so charitable. The January window also promises to be brisk for the club as they have signed Dutch defender Jos Hooiveld in anticipation of Gary Caldwell moving to Wigan.

The Latics had also bid for Scott McDonald, but that move was rejected. Birmingham had made a bid for Aiden McGeady, but even that bid was rejected. Willo Flood and Chris Killen may also leave the club to join Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile Falkirk will have to hope that the New Year brings some cheer for fans. The club is languishing at the bottom of the SPL table having managed to collect just 12 points from 17 games played so far.

Jackie McNamara has recovered from a knee injury, but Tam Scobbie, Mark Stewart and Sean Lynch remain sidelined.
