Carlisle were beaten 2-0 by Oldham, the very team they beat in the first round of the Carling Cup, on Saturday afternoon. The Cumbrians are currently seventeenth in the table, with eight points from as many games.

Carlisle are playing in the third round of the League Cup for the first time in over three decades. They upset Bristol City in the previous round. Scott Dobie scored his second goal in as many League Cup games to give Carlisle the lead, and Gary Madine made it 2-0 with a shot into the bottom right corner.

Pompey suffered their sixth league defeat of the season as they were outclassed by Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon. James Milner opened the scoring for Villa, converting a penalty won by Stiliyan Petrov. Gabriel Agbonlahor scored Villa’s second just before half time, taking advantage of a defensive lapse from Tal Ben Haim.

Portsmouth beat Hereford United 4-1 in the second round. Frederic Piquionne, John Utaka, Niko Kranjcar and Richard Hughes all got on the score sheet in an emphatic win for the home side at Fratton Park. Last season, Pompey were eliminated in the third round of the Carling Cup by Chelsea, who thrashed them 4-0.
