The English champions have fond memories of playing at the Luzhniki Stadium having won their third Champions League title during the 2007-08 season. However they have struggled against Russian opponents with United failing to win on their last two trips to the country.

Two wins from their first two games has put Manchester United in the driver's seat to progress to the next round. CSKA bounced back from their opening match defeat to Wolfsburg with a comfortable 2-1 win over Besiktas. Alan Dzagoev opened the scoring early in the 7th minute before Milos Krasic doubled the lead just past the hour mark. Ekrem Dag then reduced the deficit in injury time but it was too late for the visitors as CSKA collected all three points from the game.
