The defending champions bounced back from their penalty shootout defeat to Chelsea in the Community Shield last weekend with a narrow 1-0 win over Birmingham City in their opening match of the season.

United dominated the possession and created a number of chances in the first half with Wayne Rooney putting the Red Devils ahead by tapping in a rebound off the post in the 34th minute. However Birmingham nearly snatched a point in the second half but were unable to hit the target leaving United with all three points from the game.

Manager Alex Ferguson is struggling with his options in the defense with Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Rafael and Gary Neville all out injured. John O'Shea is expected to reclaim his place in the centre of the defense and will be partnered with Wes Brown.

Burnley on the other hand had a disappointing start to their life in the Premier League as they were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Stoke City. Stoke raced to an early lead through Ryan Shawcross before Stephen Jordan scored an own goal midway through the first half.

The Clarets have lost their last six matches against United and have failed to score in any of the games. The last time both the teams met was back in 2002-03 season when United secured a comfortable 2-0 win in the League Cup encounter.
