Pompey went close on a couple of occasions with David Nugent and Peter Crouch having a chance to seal the game, but they lacked the finishing touch. Sylvain Distin was on target, but City goalkeeper Adriano Basso was alert to the danger.

 

 

For the Robins, Bradley Orr came very close and only a fine save from David James denied him. Niko Kranjcar then had a chance, but he headed straight at Basso.

Pompey have had a nice rest during the weekend after their Premier League game against Manchester City was called off due to a frozen pitch. Manager Tony Adams will hope that the rest will snap his players out of a losing streak that has seen them lose four league games on the trot. More over Jermaine Defoe has since signed for Tottenham, which means Adams will once again pair Nugent and Crouch on Wednesday.

 

 

Bristol City will also have well-rested players after their Championship clash against Doncaster was called off due to a frozen pitch. Last season Bristol City lost out to Middlesbrough by a 2-1 margin in the third round of the competition and will hope they can progress further this time around.
