Brazil, playing without Kaka and top scorer Luis Fabiano, have now failed to win in La Paz since 1997. Wilstermann midfielder Edgar Olivares gave Bolivia a shock lead by heading in Julio Arce’s corner in the 10th minute. Twenty minutes later, referee Pablo Pozo awarded the hosts a free kick after Ramires had fouled Arce. Brazilian raised Marcelo Martins struck a wonderful free kick to make it 2-0 to the Bolivians. Brazil did pull one back through Nilmar in the second way, but Bolivia held on to complete a famous win. Venezuela were beaten 2-1 at home by Paraguay in their penultimate qualifier. All three goals of the game came in the second half. Salvador Cabanas and Oscar Cardozo were on target for Gerardo Martino’s side, while Alexander Rondon scored Venezuela’s only goal of the game. Venezuela were crushed 4-0 by Brazil when the two teams met in San Cristobal in October 2008. An opening twenty minute blitz from the Brazilians saw them take a 3-0 lead, and Robinho added a fourth in the second half to complete a convincing victory.
