Brazil will aim to consolidate their hold on the top spot in the South American world cup qualifying rounds when they take on Paraguay at the Jose do Rego Maciel Stadium on Wednesday. Brazil wrested the top spot from Paraguay on Saturday thanks to a 4-0 rout of Uruguay. Goals from Daniel Alves, Juan, Luis Fabiano and Kaka gave Brazil all three points on offer and poor results for Paraguay meant that Brazil now top the group with 24 points from 13 games. The win was also Brazil's first in Uruguay since 1976.

However a big minus for manager Dunga from this game was the red card received by Luis Fabiano, which will see him miss crucial games for his side. With Ronaldo and Ronaldinho playing no part in this series of qualifiers, Dunga will have to rely on some inexperienced names to take Brazil forward.

Meanwhile Paraguay appear to have lost their way in this tournament as they sank to a 0-2 defeat to Chile at the Defensores del Chaco Stadium in Asuncion. Goals in either half from Matias Fernandez and Humberto Suazo gave Chile a good win and kept them on course to qualify for the 2010 world cup.

If they make it this will be Chile's first appearance on the world stage since 1998. They currently have 23 points from 13 games and are placed third on the table just above Argentina. Paraguay are second on the table with 24 points from 13 games.

The game against Brazil assumes importance because the victor will go three points clear at the top of the table. A big worry for Paraguay though is that they have managed to collect just one point from their last three games.
