After seeing off the challenge of Vitoria Guimaraes, Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth face another Portuguese side in the form of SC Braga in their opening Group E UEFA Cup fixture at the AXA stadium on Thursday.

 

 

Portsmouth were rescued by two extra time goals from Peter Crouch in the second leg against Guimaraes after goals from Douglas Maia and Arthur Alves had cancelled out their 2-0 lead from the first leg. In their weekend Premiership fixture, they drew 0-0 with Aston Villa with defender Sol Campbell in excellent form. It also saw Harry Redknapp complete 25 years of football management, and there could be no better gift from Pompey to Redknapp than a winning start to their UEFA Cup group campaign. Portsmouth have been rather inconsistent this season- they have been on the receiving end of 6-0 and 4-0 thrashings from Manchester City and Chelsea. But that could be put down to a lack of squad depth rather than anything else.

 

 

With the Portuguese Liga not operating on the weekend, Braga have a few more days of rest going into this game than their English opponents. Braga made light weather of Artmedia Petrzalka in the previous round, beating the Slovakian side 2-0 away and 4-0 at home. Albert Meyong, their Cameroon striker, was on target for the Indomitable Lions in their African qualifier against Malawi. Meyong, who grabbed a hat trick for Braga against Artmedia at home, will be the main threat for Distin, Campbell and Co. Jorge Jesus generally prefers to go with a standard 4-4-2, with Eduardo in goal and Moises and Alberto Rodriguez in central defence.
