The Trotters finished in the mid-table last season and will aim to stay there and thereabouts this season as well. However that is going to be a tough task for manager Gary Megson as the club has hardly had any activity in the transfer market this summer.

But Megson has still managed to make shrewd moves in the market and has signed Aston Villa defender Zat Knight and Hull full-back Sam Ricketts. He however admitted that the club cannot afford to sign Miguel Veloso. Paul Robinson has also arrived from West Brom, while Danny Shittu could be on his way out. The good news for Megson is that Gary Cahill has signed a new deal, which will keep him at the club for the next three years.

On the other hand manager Steve Bruce may prove to be one of the best signings for Sunderland notwithstanding the quality of players he can attract to the Stadium of Light.

Bruce has been very active on the transfer market signing up Lee Cattermole, Darren Bent and Lorik Cana. Bruce is also in the market for Mourane Chamakh.

Last season this fixture ended in a 0-0 draw; a result that might not please either team this Saturday.
