The Rovers needed to go into a replay against Sunderland and then had to rely on a late winner in extra-time from Benni McCarthy to go through to this stage. David Healy put Sunderland ahead, but Aaron Mokoena pulled it back for Blackburn. Just when it appeared that the match was headed into a dreaded penalty shoot-out, McCarthy's late header sealed the tie in Blackburn’s favor.

While the Premier League continues to be top priority at Ewood Park, manager Sam Allardyce will still want to see his team through to the quarterfinals. With Roque Santa Cruz deciding to stay on at least till the end of the season, Allardyce can rest easy as far as the strike department is concerned.

 

 

However despite a string of decent results, Blackburn continue to hover in the danger zone and this may prompt Allardyce to rest some of his top players this weekend.

Meanwhile Coventry progressed through to this stage thanks to a late strike from Ward, which enabled them to beat Torquay and set up a fifth round clash against a Premier League team.

 

 

The club is in a mid-table position in the Championship and with promotion a seeming impossibility, they will want to make an impact in the FA Cup at least. The Sky Blues has signed up Livingston captain James McPake and will hope he can boost their bid to shine in the Cup. However Michael Mifsud has joined Barnsley on loan and this may hit on Coventry's aspirations in the FA Cup.
