Barely three days after their FA Cup clash, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa meet again on Tuesday night, but this time in the semifinals of the Carling Cup. Blackburn beat Chelsea on penalties in the fifth round. Nikola Kalinic, Brett Emerton and Benni McCarthy were the scorers for Sam Allarydce’s men in normal time. Rovers drew 2-2 against Sunderland in their last league game. The Wearsiders took the lead seven minutes into the second half through Darren Bent, but Blackburn equalised almost immediately through Norwegian midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen. Bent restored Sunderland’s lead in the 65^th minute, but El Hadji Diouf came off the bench and netted a late equaliser against his former club.

Aston Villa were up against Portsmouth at Fratton Park in the fifth round and Martin O’Neill’s men recovered from Stiliyan Petrov’s early own goal to post a 4-2 victory. Emile Heskey and James Milner netted in the first half, while Ashley Young and Stewart Downing scored in the second half.

Villa were beaten 1-0 by Liverpool in their last Premier League game. The Reds were frustrated by the tenacity of their opponents for most of the game but got the points they required thanks to Fernando Torres’ strike in the third minute of injury time. Villa had their chances to score, but Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina was on hand to deny both Downing and Agbonlahor, while John Carew headed wide.
