Blackburn beat Chelsea on penalties in the fifth round. Nikola Kalinic, Brett Emerton and Benni McCarthy were the scorers for Sam Allarydce’s men in normal time. Emerton, McCarthy, Vince Grella and David Hoilett converted from the spot in the shootout, while Kalinic missed. Rovers prevailed 4-3 on penalties.

Rovers were beaten 4-1 by Man City on Monday night. Argentine striker Carlos Tevez scored a hat trick at Eastlands as City cruised past Rovers. Norwegian midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen scored Blackburn’s only goal of the game, which was also the first conceded by City ‘s backline under new coach Roberto Mancini.

Villa were up against Portsmouth at Fratton Park in the fifth round and Martin O’Neill’s men recovered from Stiliyan Petrov’s early own goal to post a 4-2 victory. Emile Heskey and James Milner netted in the first half, while Ashley Young and Stewart Downing scored in the second half.

Villa were beaten 1-0 by Liverpool in their last Premier League game. The Reds were frustrated by the tenacity of their opponents for most of the game but got the points they required thanks to Fernando Torres’ strike in the third minute of injury time. Villa had their chances to score, but Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina was on hand to deny both Downing and Agbonlahor, while John Carew headed wide.
