The Black Cats followed up their impressive performance against Manchester United by collecting all three points against Liverpool last weekend. Darren Bent scored one of the most bizarre goals when his shot took a big deflection off a beach ball and flew into the net. While the winning goal was scored through a fluke, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce reiterated that his side deserved to collect all three points from the game following an excellent defensive display that saw Sunderland blank out Liverpool until injury time.
The win sees Sunderland climb to seventh in the league table and with almost a quarter of the season gone, the Black Cats are increasingly looking capable of holding on to their place inside the top half of the league table and mount a late European challenge.
The win over Liverpool came at a price though with Lee Cattermole out of action for at least three months after the midfielder was stretchered off the field with a knee injury. Cattermole is joined on the treatment table by Kenwyne Jones who will also miss the game against Birmingham with an ankle injury.
Bruce will be looking forward to playing against his former club and will be keen to exploit their poor form by collecting all three points on Saturday. Birmingham have managed just two wins from their first nine games and are on a poor run of three straight defeats.
The Blues were completely outplayed by Arsenal who cruised to a comfortable 3-1 win with Robin Van Persie, Abou Diaby and Andrei Arshavin on target for the Gunners while Lee Bowyer scored a consolation goal for Birmingham.
