Birmingham City take on Portsmouth in their first home game of the new season with manager Alex McLeish optimistic that the Blues will be able to register its first win of the season against a side tipped to finish the season in the bottom half of the league table. The Blues put in an excellent performance against defending champions Manchester United in their opening match of the season only to be denied by Wayne Rooney who scored the solitary goal of the match.

Birmingham created a number of chances of their own but were unable to beat keeper Ben Foster though McLeish will be happy with the performance of his players. Birmingham are still without a number of key players with as many as seven out of action due to injuries.

Meanwhile Portsmouth will be feeling unlucky to have started the new season with a defeat after putting up a good performance at home against Fulham. Pompey had done enough to deserve at least a point from the game but were unlucky to have conceded an early goal when Clint Dempsey's shot took a deflection off Bobby Zamora and rolled into the net.

With the takeover deal yet to be resolved, manager Paul Hart has been left without any funds for new transfers this summer with the only arrivals being either on loan or free transfers. Hart will be hoping that the takeover saga is completed before the end of the transfer window and he is provided with some much needed transfer funds to beef up a depleted squad.

Both the teams last met during the 2007-08 season when Portsmouth completed the double over Birmingham including a 2-0 win at St Andrew's Stadium.
