A poor run of 12 games without a win in the league has seen Newcastle slip to 15th in the league table, just three points above the relegation zone. With Bolton Wanderers, Birmingham City and Sunderland all picking up points regularly, Newcastle will have to start winning matches if they are to avoid the ignominy of getting relegated to the Championship come the end of the season.

The Magpies suffered yet another heavy defeat against Liverpool last weekend with three goals from Jermaine Pennant, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard in space of 8 minutes handing them a 3-0 defeat.

A major concern for Kevin Keegan will be his side's inability to hit the back of the net with Newcastle scoring just three goals in their last nine matches and conceding 25 in the process. However he will be hoping that the return of Mark Viduka will help his side find the attacking edge and put on some consistent results to move up the table.

Meanwhile Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish will be hoping that his side will take advantage of poor morale in the Newcastle camp and collect vital points from the clash that will see them move away from the drop zone.

The Blues are just one point above Bolton, with 26 points from 29 matches. Newcastle United had emerged 2-1 victors when the two teams met early this season though Keegan will be satisfied with a point this time around.
