Last year's Ligue 1 runners-up began in spectacular fashion with a 2-0 win over Beşiktaş and followed it up with a shock 1-0 win away at Liverpool on Matchday 2 before slipping to a 1-1 draw against Porto on Matchday 3. On Matchday 4, the team lost 2-1 to Porto.

Marseille's new coach Erik Gerets will be hoping to avoid having to get a result in their final match in the Champions League group stages. Marseille have an injury worry in the form of Carrasso, who could be out for six weeks after he suffered an Achilles tendon injury. Marseille are second in Group A with 7 points from 4 games.
