Benfica Lisbon have enjoyed a hugely successful pre-season under new coach Jorge Jesus. The Eagles first won the Guadiana Trophy and then followed it up by becoming the first Portuguese side to win the Amsterdam Tournament. In Amsterdam, they beat Sunderland 2-0 in their opening fixture, and beat hosts Ajax 3-2 to win the tournament with eleven points.

Benfica have been quite active in the transfer market. They recently brought in striker Keirrison on loan from European champions Barcelona. Goalkeeper Julio Cesar has been reunited with Jorge Jesus in a   €500K deal that brought him to the Stadium of Light from Belenenses. In all Benfica have made eight signings in the summer market, including the acquisitions of Javier Saviola, Ramires and Javi Garcia.

In comparison to their Portuguese opponents, Portsmouth have been relatively quiet in the transfer market. Aaron Mokoena and Steve Finnan have arrived on free transfers from Blackburn and Espanyol respectively. The quartet of Eugene Bopp, Modeste M'Bami, Fabrice Pancrate and Johan Audel are on trial with the club, and a decision on their future is expected to be taken soon.

Glen Johnson and Peter Crouch are two big name players who have left Fratton Park this summer. Johnson has gone to Liverpool, while Crouch has left for Tottenham Hotspur. The transfer of Nikola Kalinic seems to have been temporarily delayed, and the Hajduk Split forward has not travelled with the rest of the Portsmouth squad to Portugal.
