The Black Cats started off their Portuguese tour with a 1-1 draw against Brighton United. Brighton took the lead through Glenn Murray just before half time after Sunderland’s Dutch midfielder Bolo Zenden had been penalised for handling Marcos Painter’s cross.

Substitute Fraizer Campbell rescued a point for Steve Bruce’s side when he managed to get a toe to Jordan Henderson’s free kick late in the fixture. Sunderland also played Hull City on Saturday at the same venue.

Benfica have played as many as six friendlies this month. They started off with a 3-0 win over Monthey and then lost 2-1 to Sion. The Eagles recovered to thrash Aris Salonica 4-1 and then conceded three goals apiece against Groningen and Vitoria Guimaraes. The game against Groningen ended in a draw, while Vitoria were beaten in an eight goal thriller. Benfica’s last game was against principality outfit AS Monaco.
