Benfica face a must win situation against defending champions AC Milan when the two teams meet in their Champions League clash on Wednesday.

The Portuguese side will have to win their remaining two matches and hope that other results go their way if they are to avoid elimination from the group stages for a second season running. Benfica have won just one match and lost three and sit at the foot of the group table with 3 points from four games, three points less than second placed Shakhtar Donetsk.

However they face a tough task against an AC Milan team that will require just a single point from their remaining matches to qualify for the next stage. Carlo Ancelotti will be aiming for a victory that could see them finish at the top of the group regardless of results in other matches.

Milan had eased to a comfortable victory in the first leg of the fixture on Matchday 1 through early goals from Andrea Pirlo and Filippo Inzaghi before Benfica got one back late in injury time through Nuno Gomes. Benfica went on to lose their second match against Shakhtar and though they secured their first victory of the campaign with a 1-0 win over Celtic, the Scottish club had their revenge in the return rubber with a similar score line.

Milan has played just a single game away to Benfica in the 1994-95 competition with the game ending in a 0-0 draw. Benfica have a relatively good record against Italian clubs at home, winning four and losing three of their last 10 matches.
